The Milestone has finally been released in the UK, previously titled Droid, one of the most popular phone in the world and probably a superior product from the Android operating system as a whole.
The Milestone has been stranded on the coast of the UK’s main provider of the seller, eXpansys which reported that the phone is sold out all available units in the country in just three hours will be for sale. That’s great news for Motorola, of course, but how handset Milestone compared with peers and is it worth a phone in it own right or only with a Droid new marketing tactic?
The main style of the handset certainly has not changed from the Droid, although all other brands have been deleted. This is in sharp contrast with the curved design of the most modern phone and very square and the angle at which the overall design and build. It is also quite big and strong, not heavy or too big at all, but it feels heavy and well built and the overall fits easily into any pocket.
It is available in black, and brown sugar – otherwise known as gold – gold although limited to a few small elements on the main design. Overall, this is a design that will not be impressed or exciting, but elegant, durable and good to see, just do not expect full blown way at first sight.
Under the tent there was quite a bit happening. This 3.7-inch screen hides a slide-out qwerty keyboard and a 550MHz processor is powering everything. There are pre-installed 16GB of memory via microSD cards and can connect the phone via all the usual outlets including GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Quad-band. Currently, GSM mobile phone is fully capable and can run on the network in the UK.
As for features, sports milestone in Motorola’s 5 megapixel camera that can capture DVD-quality video at up to 24 fps. There are 4x digital zoom and dual flash with auto focus. The camera software allows a variety of different modes, including scene modes, store locations, focus mode, flash mode and white balance options. Portrait and night scene is set by default, but there is no macro to take close-ups. Although they could not compete with the right compact camera, is pretty fast and the quality of which is listed as one of the better camera smartphones on the market.
The screen is as bright and can be seen every other smart phone, although not using the newer – and far more expensive – OLED technology. Android 2.0 works as advertised in the phone and the processor fast enough to keep things moving at a sharp pace. This system has enough new features of 1.6 that is being used in other handsets, although not really innovative. Plus, having the latest version of the application means a greater choice of shops.
Browsing on a phone is a joy thanks to full support of the milestone for the multi-touch, something that no Droid. However, multi-touch is now only limited to certain applications, it unfortunately will not work for other built-in applications such as photo galleries.
Overall, Milestone was one of the most impressive Android phone is available now, and of course a strong rival to HTC’s Heroes. Not locked into a single network will attract many people and while the software that makes Google Maps so famous Droid is missing here as it was only in the U.S., replacement Motonav almost as good and of course a GPS function.
